We bought this book for our son when he was two, and now he's almost five and it's still in heavy rotation. The illustrations are beautiful, and learning to count to ten is only one of many skills your child can learn when you read this book aloud. The words and the pictures work perfectly together so even if your child doesn't understand all the words yet, the pictures tell the story just as well. Most pages have windows to the next page so kids can anticipate what's up next, and can easily turn the pages themselves. The pages are thicker than most, but not like board book pages so the book won't quickly become too babyish for preschoolers. At the end of the book, the numbers one through ten are clearly illustrated and summarized, with additional counting activities that older kids will enjoy for years. Parents can also begin to teach their toddlers about all of the different animals and insects throughout the book, and there are even opportunities for discussing weather and seasons. Overall, this is a great book that accomplishes what we all look for in a children's book -- it's fun, artistic and educational.
