On the Edge of Empire: Gender, Race, and the Making of British Columbia, 1849-1871

There are two types of good history books: One is a concise, well-organized recitation of the facts, presenting a good timeline and all the pertinent names and dates. The second is a more focused, heavily analytical work that brings the period to life and offers insight and understanding along with a generalized overview of the period. Adele Perry's "On the Edge of Empire" is a great example of the latter and is one of the best history books I have ever read. Of course, the book is not just about history, it provides a sociological picture of Colonial British Columbia. But, despite being a resident of the province and learning all my history in school, there was so much I learned from this book. From the bride ships in Victoria to the many complexities of race and gender amongst the setters, Perry shines light on so many aspects of history and does it all in a highly entertaining manner. As well, her treatment of the First Nations people of British Columbia is a much-needed anecdote to much of the older history texts on the subject. This book is well-documented, comprehensive, and engaging. If you're interested in the history of British Columbia, or the social framework of a colony, I could not recommend this book more.
