Book Overview

Sheila Roberts' On Strike for Christmas is a humorous, heartwarming novel about a community of women who are tired of feeling unappreciated for all the hard work they do at Christmas -- so they stage a boycott. At Christmastime, it seems as though a woman's work is never done. Trimming the tree, mailing the cards, schlepping to the mall, the endless wrapping-- bah humbug ! So this year, Joy and Laura and the rest of their knitting group decide to...

What a neat book!

What a neat book! On Strike for Christmas was funny, sweet, and the perfect book to put me in the mood for the holidays! I recommend this book to any woman who bakes the Christmas cookies, hosts holiday dinners for the in-laws, or just wants a good read before Christmas. Sheila Roberts is a great author who writes with a lot of heart.

Funny, Ridiculous, Plausible

I loved the book! It's funny and ridiculous but still plausible. I liked the way the specific individual complaints snowballed into a movement. You made me think about all I do at Christmas and how maybe I can scale back to something more reasonable. Thanks! Janet Kragen

Good will to men, or is that good luck?

I enjoyed this book immensely. There have been many times when I've wanted to boycott Christmas, mostly because it ends up being more complicated than it needs to be. If you're feeling overwhelmed by the holidays, and a little less than jolly, make some time to read On Strike for Christmas. Sheila Roberts reminds us that Christmas is not about getting, it's about giving. Sharing our talents, our gifts, and our love with others is what life is all about.

On Strike for Christmas

This book was so funny. I was laughing so hard I was in tears. Every over worked parent can relate to what happens in the story, and a lesson learned for anyone who isn't. I sent a copy to my friends and family for Christmas.

A must read for the holidays!

Reading a Christmas book puts me in the mood for the holidays. Don't you think? Keep in mind, we're in the southern part of Louisiana. There isn't any snow and cold weather usually doesn't hit until after the first of the year. Reading Christmas fiction warms me up for the holiday season. "On Strike for Christmas" by Sheila Roberts is the perfect treat to do just that. Here's a little bit of the story: Thanksgiving, Glen Fredericks has a grand ol' time enjoying family, friends, and football while his wife, Laura, did all the work. The day is so enjoyable he makes sure to announce to everyone they'll be doing this again for Christmas. He does this without asking Laura how she felt. Across town, Joy Robertson and her husband, Bob, are celebrating Thanksgiving Day with Joy's unruly family. Joy looks forward to these zany holiday parties, especially since her kids are grown. Her husband doesn't share her view and feels his wife as well as her family go overboard. After a heated disagreement, an idea forms in Joy's mind. She decides to give Bob what he wants which is a nice, quiet, but boring Christmas. This means, she isn't going to do anything this year for Christmas - no shopping, no baking, no decorating, no cooking, no present no wrapping, no stocking stuffing, and absolutely no entertaining. When Joy meets up with Laura and the rest of the knitting group at the Stitch In Time, she shares her Christmas plan. Laura loves the idea of a strike on Christmas. Sharon Benedict, dubbed Yulezilla by her husband Pete, decides to join as do Kay Carter, whose husband suffers from Penny-Pinchitis during the holidays. When the Holly Herald airs this story, more women of Holly join and this becomes war of the sexes. As December unfolds into the anticipated madness, the women of Stitch In Time soon discover instead of teaching their husbands a lesson, they learn something valuable as well. My thoughts: Hands-down, this has to be the best Christmas book I have read. The characters are so meticulously developed, I had to double checked to see if it really was a work of fiction. Glen who is forever getting speeding tickets had me laughing out loud the most, whereas Bob touched my heart. I couldn't help but share tears of delight right along with Joy. What an absolutely cute, cute, cute book!
