Notes from a Wayfarer: The Autobiography of Helmut Thielicke

I enjoy reading a well-written biography. Given the extraordinary life of Helmut Thielicke and his times, I recommend this book because the humanness of the man and his life during the Nazi years and afterward until his death is remarkable. He explores what it means to be human: illness, near death, marriage, WWII and air attacks and faithfulness as a pastor and a theologian who lives in interesting times come to life, as we explore life and its meaning in desperate times and in good times. Because truth is stranger than fiction, Dr. Thielicke reveals the warmth of a Christian humanism [older version during the Reformation] and applies that form of Christian humanism to the pastorate, the Hamburg University professorship, and then as a sought-after theologians who graces the world stage with humor and mirth and earthy seriousness. His beloved wife, who often appears to accompany him on his out of Germany journeys, is ever as wise and witty as he is. If you want to lift your own spirits and enjoy the life of a delightful theologian, I heartily recommend this book. In my estimation, it is a keeper, not a dry tome. James A.
