This short volume by Olav Riste and Berit Nokleby is designed as an introduction for English-speaking audiences to the Norwegian resistance to the World War Two Nazi occupation of Norway. The experienced historians Riste and Nokleby capture the essential facts in a short survey-level book, nicely seeded with photographs. The experience of occupation by an outside power is one foreign to Americans; for Norway, it was a traumatic event that echoes to the current day. Although Norway was fortunate to escape the destruction of a liberation fight in 1945, the Nazi occupation was in all other respects every bit as onerous as that visited on France and other nations. To their credit, the Norwegians rebounded quickly from their battlefield defeat in 1940 to build a large resistance network to prepare for the day of liberation and to strike back where possible at the occupiers. The most dramatic act of the resistance, the destruction of heavy water production apparatus essential to the Nazi atomic bomb project, recieves only brief coverage here. This volume focuses on the overall scope of the resistance movement, to include the gathering of arms, the training of a shadow army, and the dissemination of information to counteract the propaganda of the Norwegian Nazi government. The heroism of the Norwegian Royal family is a highlight. This book is recommended to the reader interested in a quick introduction to the Norwegian Resistance Movement during the Second World War, and as context for visitors intending to vacation in Norway.
