Beautiful and useful

I bought this for my hubby for his bday after moving to SUnnyvale, CA. It looks like it will be a great fit for the area since we're totally new to it. It's a beautiful book too!

Using Grace's book for a decade I've become a great gardener

My go to book each month for over a decade now. It has consistently provided me monthly useful information and to do lists to grow fantastic gardens filled with flowers, fruits, and vegetables suitable for living in the bay area. I'm here to buy another copy for a friend. This book has worked for me from my beginning gardener stage, to my now very comfortable in growing by seed, cuttings, or transplants, hundreds of varieties of plants. Photos are readily available using online search engines, or better yet, seek out the plants in three dimensions at californias many gardening stores. I've taken lists of plants from this book with me to check out in person at nurseries which provided me first hand info no glossy photo could have. This book is fantastically useful.

Read it every month

I've had this book a while and was curious why it didn't have a 5 star rating. If you live in Northern California this book is very informative and very well presented. It is the only garden reference I've read cover to cover, but that is due to its layout taking you through the season month by month. Yes, it does not have photos, but if you actually take the time and read you'll find it very informative and even discover information about drought tolerant plants.

A must-have for newbies to Northern California

I stumbled on this book at the library, and now I have to have my very own copy to keep at my bedside! People who have grown up gardening in Northern California might find Endicott's advice old hat, but for people like me -- a longtime gardener but new to this region -- or for longtime NoCal residents who are just now getting into gardening -- this is an excellent guide. Highly recommended!

Indispensable Guide for Northern CA gardeners

While there are many guides to Bay Area Gardening, those of us in Zone 14 (Sacramento) are usually busy trying to translate instructions for a dramatically different climate to our own gardening needs. This book is an indispensable guide for ALL Northern Californians. Month-by-month the author tells us what all gardeners should be doing, then has specific recommendations for Central Valley, Mountain, and Coastal gardeners. Each month also includes great advice on pest control (she favors gentle methods), planting, pruning, and what is usually available at local nurseries. This guide is especially good for people who are new to Northern CA, and are in garden shock. When I moved from Zone 4 to Zone 14 it was the first book I purchased and it was a real life saver (the plants's lives, that is!)
