Nickel Dreams

Not too much on Glen Campbell. But she tells her story up to age 38 and it's interesting. She's had quite a rollercoaster ride with her life. Recommend this book.

Like most country singers Tanya Tucker has had a hard life beginning with a modest upbringing in which her parents didn't have a lot of money but had a lot of love for their family. "Nickel Dreams" follows Tanya's life from her humble begiinings in which her dad knew she had the gift to sing to Tanya being a Nashville superstar. As a reader it was amazing to see how Tanya became an overnight sensation with the song "Delta Dawn" as well as one of the youngest people ever to receive a recording contract. Tanya is also very upfront and honest about her demons in her life, mainly her problems with drug and alcohol abuse as well as her severe depression. She talks candidly about the abuse she suffered from Glen Campbell. Those pages are hair-raising as she recounts the time in which Glenn, stoned from cocaine, elbowed her in the face, knocking out her two front teeth at the roots. What is also evident in this book is Tanya's humor in her life and her wittiness. It's obvious that what has gotten Tanya through some of the hardships that she's encountered is her ability to laugh and see the positive sides of things. Hollywood has made movies on the lives of Loretta Lynn and Johnny Cash and Dolly Parton's life story is currently in preproduction. Let's hope that Tanya Tucker's life story is not too far from being made for the silver screen. When asked by an interviewer who she would like to see play her Tanya stated "Leanne Rimes".

This book was very good I had a hard time putting it down I think Tayna was very honest and told it like it was. I was shocked to read that Glen knocked two of her teeth out. Also Tayna tells us all about how bad her drug use was and how she got help for it. I think this book is one of the most honest books out there because she tells it like it is and was. Good book for any fan of Tayna!

I very much liked reading this book, though not all parts of it are equally interesting. I was particularly fascinated to read about the historical background and the early living conditions of Tanya Tucker's family and the way she got both pushed by her father and at the same time pushed herself, as well, to get into a singing career. Then, there is a part that I considered rather lengthy with a lot of name dropping. I very much liked the story again as she got to the part when she had to seriously treat her drug problems. Again, it seems, she had to be pushed into it, and she foiled the system in a way, yet the goal seems to have been reached, anyway. There is quite a bit of self analyzing, unless it's her co-writer who contributed those parts. Anyway, the books is very good reading, and it's been quite some time since I finished a book so quickly.

I bought this book at the airport out of desperation for something to read and was pleasantly suprised that I really liked it. I have read many autobiographies and feel that this is one of the rare ones that "rings true". It was a bit corny at times, but I liked the fact that Tanya ,at all times, took responsibility for her own actions. I'm about the same age as Tanya Tucker and although I am not a big country western fan, have followed her music through the years. I also felt that she went out of her way not to purposely slander anyone in an effort to set record straight. A great read. You go girl!!
