Nelson's Compact Series: Compact Bible Commentary

Ordered three of these books and come to find out two of them came from the same place (both) with a $3.99 shipping price....

This is exactly what I expected. It is compact and basic, covering the fundamentals well. Verse by verse commentary with some extra,'in depth' commentaries thrown in. This book will be sufficient for the average individual who just wants to understand the Bible better. It would also be helpful to those teaching basic Bible classes or Sunday school. Every serious reader of the Bible should have a basic commentary like this one for reference.

another fine compact reference tool from nelsons that is easy to use. it's small enough to take any where and provides solid information and definitions to the people, places, books, settings and teachings of the bible. it even explains important themes, terms and doctines, such as conversion, imputation, election, predestination and justification etc. while what i have seen so far for the definitions is good, i did not like the first sentence in the justification explanation. they say it is "the process by which sinful human beings are made acceptable to a holy God." that smacks more of the roman catholic viewpoint. justification is a one time act. sanctification is the ongoing process. but the further definition is fine. the text size is very readable and there's lot's of pictures and illustrations as well as pronunciations(which i always need!)to the words. this is condensed from the exhaustive new illustrated bible dictionary by nelson. it has trimmed back the longer articles and extra details to get right to the essential information and basic facts on a multitude of important subjects. this way you can find out what you need to know quickly and conveniently where ever you happen to be! while the bigger dictionaries, commantaries and concordances have the most info, i find it's the smaller compact versions that i always go to first. as they say on the back cover "a solid foundation" and "a must" for every bible owners personal reference library. i concur heartily!

can,t be beat for the price, content and compact size. this is my all time favorite "quick reference", first to go too commentary. it is a condensed version of nelson's new illustrated bible commentary that is small enough to be taken any place so will always be available, and having a verse-by-verse explanation of every book in the bible you get better insight than you would from a more general chapter- by-chapter edition. as the above reviewer say's it has helpful word studies and good cross-references that will aid anyone in developing their knowledge of the bible. a definite plus to any commentary collection!

This commentary has been useful for clarification on minor issues. The word studies and cross-references are insightful and helpful. The commentary does not include the "maps, photos, illustrations" that are mentioned on the back cover; they must be found in other titles of the Compact Series. This commentary is worth the small price you pay for it. It is not big enough to have too much "opinion", plus the fact that the material comes from many different authors adds to its unbiased writing.
