This book, and its mate covering US warships, may be what you are looking for if you want a concise overview of NATO fleets. The pictures are clear and detailed enough for identification and the information is neither too sparse to be satisfying nor too technical to be understood. My only complaint is that after eight years the book is somewhat out of date. However, the entries contain several predictions on the fate of each class, most of which came true, so the book has aged gracefully. It is still useful today, whether you want to ID a ship in the news or make sense of the acronyms in the last Tom Clancy novel.
