My Mom

I bought this book for my 8 month old because I thought it was a good idea to put a foreign language book in our reading repetoire. It also gave me a chance to practice speaking French. When we first read it, she laughed (babies know when it's not their normal language). She loves the book for it's pictures. I love it because she gets so excited about it, and the fact that there is diversity in the people photographed for this book. I just ordered Mon Papa, which we haven't read yet, but the pictures in that book are also diverse. I think diversity is a great message to send to a youngster, and the younger, the better!

The simple story in Spanish shows the mother interacting with the baby including reading to the child. The cardboard format is perfect for infants whose first instinct is to put the book in their mouth. The book is also published in English. Our library used it in READ-TO-YOUR-BABY packets for new parents. The packet included the book, a reading tips flyer, a literacy classes flyer, and a Welcome New Baby flyer with Baby's First Library Card enclosed.

We're using this book for a project with our local hospital. Each new mother and baby receive a copy of the book and a packet of information about the importance of reading to the child. We felt the new mothers would like the message in the book so well, they would want to read it frequently to their baby. This is a joint project of the Weslaco Public Library, the Weslaco Rotary and Knapp Medical Center.
