Excellent for children and grandparents who enjoy language

This runs a close second to KrUss's earlier "My Great-grandfather and I" for catching the ambiance of the pre-W.W.II Helgoland in which he grew up, and the unique relationship between young boy and old man. In addition to empathetic characterizations of his relatives and other residents of that isolated island, the book is filled with word-games played by the two and with clever but touching stories that generally carry a moral, without being preachy. A bit of the word play is doubtless lost in translation, but it is a satisfying book to read aloud to the 4 to 10 set, or simply to enjoy on one's own. (For the intermediate student of German, the originals are a painless way to honest vocabulary building as KrUss panders to no one. That also benefits the translations.)
