Exploring the psychological dynamics of the relationship between a precocious yet na ve teenage girl and her magnetic and manipulative teacher, a brilliant, all-consuming read that marks the explosive debut of an extraordinary new writer.

2000. Bright, ambitious, and yearning for adulthood, fifteen-year-old Vanessa Wye becomes entangled in an affair with Jacob Strane, her magnetic and guileful forty-two-year-old English teacher.

2017. Amid the rising wave of allegations against powerful men, a reckoning is coming due. Strane has been accused of sexual abuse by a former student, who reaches out to Vanessa, and now Vanessa suddenly finds herself facing an impossible choice: remain silent, firm in the belief that her teenage self willingly engaged in this relationship, or redefine herself and the events of her past. But how can Vanessa reject her first love, the man who fundamentally transformed her and has been a persistent presence in her life? Is it possible that the man she loved as a teenager--and who professed to worship only her--may be far different from what she has always believed?

Alternating between Vanessa's present and her past, My Dark Vanessa juxtaposes memory and trauma with the breathless excitement of a teenage girl discovering the power her own body can wield. Thought-provoking and impossible to put down, this is a masterful portrayal of troubled adolescence and its repercussions that raises vital questions about agency, consent, complicity, and victimhood. Written with the haunting intimacy of The Girls and the creeping intensity of Room, My Dark Vanessa is an era-defining novel that brilliantly captures and reflects the shifting cultural mores transforming our relationships and society itself.

MY DARK VANESSA by Kate Elizabeth Russell Incredibly disturbing yet riveting and compelling. I felt equally disgusted and intrigued as the story unfolded. This explores the ongoing psychological impact and trauma left on Vanessa Wye who, at fifteen, was seduced by her forty-two year old English teacher, Jacob Strane. While, this is a work of fiction, Vanessa’s grooming, manipulation and abuse by Jacob is/was/can be a painful reality for many people. The author captures the complexity of Vanessa and Jacob’s “relationship”, the subtlety of Jacob’s manipulation, then Vanessa’s denial, self hatred and cognitive dissonance so realistically. Even though I was left feeling quite unsettled, I do recommend this book because it’s an important story/lesson to tell. Just be mindful of your mental/emotional state; heed the many trigger warnings before proceeding. **Note: Grace Gummer’s audio narration/performance was so well done. Also, enjoyed the author interview at the end. Rating: 4.75/5 ⭐️

I haven’t fully read the book, but so far it’s great. Kate Russell does well with atmosphere, and creating scenes that the reader can clearly picture. The book itself was delivered in a timely manner and in great condition.

Dark, Disturbing, and Necessary

Through the evocative narrative of My Dark Vanessa, Kate Elizabeth Russell immerses us in an alarming tale that demands our attention. The story delves into predators' intricate methods and the pervasive damage they inflict, often amplified by our collective refusal to acknowledge the painful truths beneath. What stands out most in this novel is the powerful juxtaposition of Jacob, a respected and beloved teacher among faculty, students, and parents, and the monster he becomes to the few vulnerable individuals he sees as prey. This stark reminder of the intricacies of abuse and how wolves can dress themselves to blend and obfuscate their true nature is powerful. The importance of this novel goes beyond its ability to expose the realities of manipulation and abuse. It is a testament to the power of storytelling to challenge preconceived notions and prompt reflection on our own beliefs and assumptions. My Dark Vanessa invites us to confront the insidious damage done by those in positions of power, removing any illusions of romance and shedding light on what abuse looks like.
