My Brother, My Sister, and I

I really liked the book although it was sad it touched me. It's something that you should read. It is funny and sad and happy and everything I really enjoyed it.

This book has a lot of events happening such as escping from Korea, being refugees, injured badly, being bullied at school and losing parents. That is surely a lot for a 13 year-old girl. But, Yoko overcame all the hardships and managed herself well. I was so happy to see the Kawashimas reunion with their Father. I was even happier with their achievements in life. It taught me a good value of life.

This is the book about the story followed by "So far from Bamboo Grove." I recommend these books to everyone, who are interested in history, especially about WWII. There are always hidden stories behind wars. Not so many people can report what really happened. A little girl could survive from the horrible war. She and her siblings lived strongly without their parents. No money, no food... I could not waste food after I had read this book. We need to learn love and trust of this family.

'So far from the bamboo grove' is a must-read before this sequel. Both books are sad, touching and many emotions held within. My eyes became misty at the end of 'My brother, my sister and I'. I was touched, moved, the instant the book ended, recounting all that had happened to the Kawashimas. I encourage everyone to read this wonderful biography.

I recently reread this book in preparation for teaching my class of seventh graders. One must read Far From the Bamboo Grove before reading this one. It is heartwrenching to see the twists and turns in the life of the Kawashimas. But as brother Hideyo says," ... the Kawashima children can become a few drops of water in the ocean and make ripples that will spread humanity." My students are in awe of this family's struggle to survive. They are more appreciative of their lives and their parents. Yoko Kawashima Watkins is our hero. This is a book that will not be forgotten.
