This innovative book funded by National Science Foundation, was developed as part of the calculus reform movement. It is problem driven and features exceptional exercises based on applications.
I have to disagree with my fellow Californians and unfortunately agree with someone from New York. This is an excellent foundation overview without the clutter of Anton's and Stewart's books. I found it to be a conveniently carried paperback and an enjoyable read.
This book presents the essential ideas

Multivariable Calculus presents the essential ideas of the subject in an intuitive manner. It doesn't overwhelm you with detail like Stewart's "Calculus" books. The use of numerical, graphical and algebraic examples make many concepts,eg, implicit function theorem, line integrals and Green's theorem an easy business to understand. However, the examples in some parts like change of variables were a little too simplistic, and I thought lacked adequate explanation.
