Book Overview

What if Baker Street's most gifted resident wasn't named Sherlock Holmes? What if, instead, that title belonged to his unassuming housekeeper, Mrs. Hudson? Playfully breaking with convention, Mrs. Hudson and the Spirits' Curse brings a fresh twist to the classic Victorian mystery.

An evil stalks London, blown in from the tropics. Stories of cursed giant rats and malign spirits haunt the garrets of the East London neighborhood of Limehouse. A group of merchants are dying one by one. The elementary choice to investigate these mysterious deaths is, of course, the team of Holmes and Dr. Watson. But the unique gifts of their housekeeper, Mrs. Hudson, and her orphaned assistant Flotsam, will also be needed to solve the case. Can she do it all under the nose of Sherlock himself?

Praise for Martin Davies:
"The voice is fantastic...so readable and enjoyable and multi-layered." (Boyd Hilton, Radio Five)
"A pacy confection of history, mystery and romance... a most engaging and unusual novel." (The Times)
"Ambitious and intriguing... part thriller, part love story, part quest, this is a hugely readable book." (Spectator)

A Mrs. Hudson Who Upstages the Great Holmes

I hope this book will become the first of a series. Martin Davies gives us a fresh and innovative look at the housekeeper of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. She is an extraordinary character, kind and caring, but at the same time, shrewd, perceptive, and capable of brilliant deductive thinking. She never becomes a rival to Holmes, but in her own subtle way she provides many of the insights and clues that lead the great detective...

And Whatever Is Left, However Unlikely, Will Be Dinner...

I actually purchased this novel with a certain amount of trepidation-because I have one Mrs. Hudson novel (not by this author!) on my shelves, and try as I may, I just can't seem to get into it. But I liked the write-up on this novel, and as this was Mr. Davies first attempt, I felt I should at least give him a chance. I'm glad I did. The story is told through the narration of a young girl named the unusual sobriquet of "Flotsam",...

Very good read

I was expecting a so-so pastiche with this book, but I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed the characters, and they held my interest to the end. This is a good story.

When her employer commits suicide Mrs. Hudson takes a job as housekeeper to Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson; she brings...
