Book Overview

Use your Mother Power to make a difference.

Dr. Jacqueline Hornor Plumez became inspired by the power of women when vacationing in Argentina. There she learned about the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo--women who risked their lives by protesting the kidnapping, torture and murder of their children by their country's brutal junta. She started to investigate women throughout the world who gained economic, political and moral power by using their...

Inspiring collection of factual stories

In "Mother Power" author Jacqueline Plumez builds a convincing case that there is a change occurring around the world as women discover their real power. Looking at factual events that have occurred and are still occurring she takes us through example after example of women coming together to change their world. Examples from the book include the mothers who organized in Argentina to stop the disappearance of their children when the police, political system, and even the church would do nothing. Or the mothers that organized to demonstrate against the violence in Northern Ireland and the reduction in violence that resulted. Or the group of mothers in Larchmont, New York who started an organization to help with the domestic needs of the terminally ill. Mother power does not only occur on such large scales creating groups and organizations to change the world, but also on much smaller scales. The author demonstrates this with stories such as the mother whose son wrote the Pulitzer Prize winning novel "A Confederacy of Dunces". Her son was unsuccessful at getting it published and when she reread it after his death she decided that it should be published. Her story of how she continued after multiple rejections and dead ends shows how her belief in her son's novel carried her through to finally getting it published. This book is a great collection of factual stories that show how women and the instincts and qualities of motherhood are changing the world, sometimes one person at a time, sometimes whole nations at a time. "Mother Power" is a highly recommended read.

An old dog can learn new tricks

After being given this book by my son, I quickly skimmed through and wondered if this book would be appropriate for a middle-aged woman who is slowing down - not gearing up. After reading the book, however, I realized that Dr. Plumez had presented an uplifting perspective of the qualities that woman sometimes find themselves apologizing for - such as nagging - and showing how these unique qualities can and have been used as effective agents of change. These maternal qualities - being protective, being peacemakers, being emotional and fair and others - are all qualities that can transform the world if used appropriately. Mother Power gives many examples of how these qualities did, in fact, lead to change throughout the world and how these qualities helped the author deal with the greatest tragedy a mother can deal with - the illness and loss of her beloved son. The book is well organized and moves from story to story seamlessly. I have recommened this book to my book club and I anticipate a deep discussion of how we have all used these qualities in our own lives to accomplish our goals.

Mother Power

This book is not only inspirational, it is enlightening. The fascinating stories about women (not all of whom are mothers)who have changed the world in positive ways is just one more reason to read this book. Dr.Plumez has found a way not only to entertain us, but also to give all of us a real boost!

mother power by a woman that is not a mother

Mother Power is very inspirational!!!!! You don't have to be a mother to love this book. It makes you want to go out and do something to help make this world we live in a better place for all..

Mother Power - Even if you already believe we are wonderful!

Finally, a book that will help women to find (and use) the strength within them, whether they be running a household or mananging a corporation. With an effective combination of hard fact and psychological insight, Plumez takes the reader on an eye-opening journey of astonishing accomplishments of 'ordinary' women and helps us to believe that there is a wellspring of mother power within us all. As a mother and a psychologist, I was impressed with how well Plumez translates her obviously well researched material into practical 'how-to's' about how to find, develop, and use our maternal strength. I loved the book and bought ten copies to give to friends - for a special celebration of Mother's Day.
