Knowing the 220 Dolch words enables a student to read 50% to 75% of the words in most K-3 books. Edward Dolch researched many books, tallied the words for different grades, and made his lists. They are called sight words because knowing them on sight speeds up reading and because many need to be known by how they look rather than by decoding. This book offers great practice with Dolch sight words. It doesn't have a lot of illustrations like most newer books but that is helpful. Kids look at the words instead of guessing at the pictures.
practical practice

The most practical practice for learning Dolch sight words is using them in books like this one and the others which are listed with this book under "Customers who bought this book also bought...." These books are so much better than all of the little games and flash cards. It is also good to have books without many illustrations like this because kids have to recognize the words without just guessing from the pictures. I know it is a teaching technique to let them discover on their own by guessing from pictures but they really need to know the words. Pictures can also be misleading.

My 8 year old son has Dyslexia and is reading at a first grade level. This book with it's minimum of pictures yet frequent site words that he knows makes him feel proud. At first when he saw all the words he said " I can't read this". When I showed him the first line and he knew the words he just took off from there. Last night he read 1 1/2 pages a total of about 150 words... it was a great accomplishment!

This is the same Mr. Dolch who established the famous Dolch sight word list. These are basic sight words which any child who reads well MUST know. Many of the Dolch words can't be sounded out. This book gives great practice with a topic which kids love.
