Montgomery's Children

I just finished this book today, and it still has me reeling. This novel is about the events in an upstate New York town called Montgomery. It is an interracial town, but the events focus on the black community. The novel interweaves stories of several families, but if I had to identify the most important "strand" in the novel, it would have to be how the youth Gerald grows up amid secrets, controversy, madness, and mysticism in this town.Parts of this novel actually had me in tears, and the only other novel that did that to me was "The Color Purple."The only reason that I did not give "Montgomery's Children" five stars was because although each character was dynamic and colorful, the jumps in time period were at worst distracting, and at best, not helpful to my understanding the plot.I really liked this novel and I feel that if you like Toni Morrison, then Richard Perry might be your cup of tea.
