Delightful and probably unique, if not great; if you're a baseball history nut, you'll appreciate this book. The author's nostalgic love of the game and its history spills off every page. You'll feel like you're listening to the reminiscences of someone's dear grandfather. Alas, the work is spotty: picturesque, well-written episodes alternate with throwaway stuff, such as lengthy stream-of-consciousness listings of basically "Guys I remember who were pretty good plus a bunch of other guys who maybe weren't half bad that I thought I'd mention too because I liked them." But, not to worry -- if you're into it, you won't mind. After all, I didn't.
