Getting What You Want Through Mind Power

I am quite familiar with the works of the authors of this book and can therefore vouch for its usefulness. I am especially familiar with the works of the junior author. Prof A Lazarus was a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Integrative and Eclectic Psychotherapy of which I am the founder. In essence, this book teaches a form of self hypnosis, which is not a surprise, regarding the fact that the senior author is the editor of "Hypnosis: Questions and Answers". Pages 1 - 99 gives a solid grounding of the concept of mind power. Pages 100 - 222 teaches the techniques used by high achievers in all walks in life. They teach you step-by-freeing step how to unlock your mind's vast potential, turning your negative thoughts into positive action, your limitations into strength, your gloom into brightly lit horizons, and all your hopes and dreams into reality. I agree with Dr Irene Kassorla that this book is a "must for people who want to take control of their lives and enjoy more success and happiness". Rene Descartes, the father of modern philosophy expressed essentially the same thought as follows, "It is not enough to have a good mind. The main thing is to use it well". In what follows I shall outline 5 salient features of this book: (1). Cyndy's use of symbolic imagery proved very valuable, both for increasing assertiveness and managing strong feelings (eg anger), but, each person has to come up with his (her) own symbols; (2). Mental training is an invaluable tool for more effective living that you can use as often as you want. No matter what you do, your mind is going to deal with every situation in one manner or another; (3). Starting about 10 days before the operation, AAL carefully visualised each step in the process several times a day, using appropriate posthypnotic suggestions to the effect that he would feel comfortable, calm, somewhat detached, and curious; (4). To prepare himself for his father's impending death, BZ over a period of months imagined a number of scenes that indicate that his father was dead. For example, he imagined picking up the phone to dial his father but then realising, sadly, that there was noone to call; and (5). Many people (eg Mahatma Gandhi) take a day off each week to listen to his inner adviser (inner voice). The only test of whether having a guide is useful is to adjudge whether it serves our purposes. There are plenty other useful examples in the book. Digest this book and you will get whatever you want.

Practical Techniques

How many times have you performed a task better than ever because your mind was unusually focused and energized? Or how often after a failure have you realized, "I told myself all along I couldn't do it?" Although our mental attitudes control our performance, most people use only a small portion of the mind's vast potential. In this remarkable book, two internationaly acclaimed clinical psychologists have combined their professional expertise to provide clear strategies and nuts-and-bolts techniques that can give you new power over your life. The methods presented here by Dr. Bernie Zilbergeld and Dr. Arnold A. Lazarus are the same mental-training techniques that Olympic champions and high achievers from all walks of life have found so effective in attaining peak performance. Mind Power is the first book to show you how easy it can be to use these techniques to set goals, reduce stress, and increase performance, creativity, and productivity - in other words, to help you shape your life into what you wish it to be. Millions of people have sought professional help to learn mental training, but Mind Power shows you how to learn, practice, and adapt the methods to your own. The authors demystify "mind power" for the layperson and illustrate through case histories and their personal experiences how it can work in your life. With step-by-step instructions that are easy to follow, they describe a variety of relaxation, concentration, and focused-imagery techniques, as well as exercises that let you master each method. - from book's dustjacket
