Mermaid & the Star

My recently four year old daughter had a mermaid birthday party this year. As an appropriately themed gift, she received a copy of THE MERMAID AND THE STAR by Nicola Baxter and Deborah Rigby. THE MERMAID AND THE STAR is an extremely lovely book. It sparkles, glitters, and gleams throughout, and my wee one is very taken with it. THE MERMAID AND THE STAR is the story of a little mermaid princess who sees the most beautiful star she has ever seen dancing through the night sky. It is so gorgeous, that it makes her sad when she cannot see it any more; however, the very next day she finds the star at the bottom of the ocean. She is very excited and takes her new best friend home with her. At first the star is happy, but each day, he shines a little less brightly, because he misses his home in the night sky. The mermaid finally realizes the problem, and she takes him back home where he shines even more exquisitely than he did before. Although the mermaid will miss her friend, she knows that he is where he should be. This stunning board book will thrill any little girl under the age of about 7. The illustrations are bright and colorful, and each page has cut outs lined with shimmering glitter paper. This book is a delight for the eyes, as well as the ears. The lesson of "if you love something let it go..." is well couched in terms that a child can understand, and most certainly, is an appropriate lesson at any age. Wrapped up in this glorious package, it is a lesson my young one understood immediately.
