Mentor: The Kid & the CEO: A Simple Story of Achieving Significance

As it turns out, yes! To begin with, as self-help novels go, this one is remarkably well written. Even cynical old me found myself being drawn into the story; as the plot progressed, I actually wanted to know how it would come out and what would happen to the characters! The credit for this arguably goes more to Walter Jenkins, the ghostwriter, than it does to Tom Pace, the man who conceived the idea. (Mr. Jenkins is an interesting character in his own right, a man who regards completing your book for you not as a job but rather as a "calling".) As for Mr. Pace, this book and one of the characters is based in part on actual events in his life, though chances are, not the character you'll think it is. One of Mr. Pace's true passions is the importance of reading and in addition to the books directly referred to and read by characters in the story: The Greatest Miracle in the World, The E-Myth Revisited: Why Most Small Businesses Don't Work and What to Do About It, How to Win Friends & Influence People, Think and Grow Rich, and The Purpose Driven Life: What on Earth Am I Here For?, he includes a suggested reading list in Appendix D, by no means composed entirely of self-help books. Judged strictly on the merits, this book has a lot of good advice on how to succeed in business as well as in life, which you'd expect from a self-help book, but it contains something more that makes it stand out from the crowd. The trouble with self-help books is that they tend to work only for the self-motivated. The easily discouraged, the hopelessly pessimistic, and the terminally lazy tend not to get much out of them because not even the best of them can keep you from giving up and quitting. That's where Mr. Pace's stressing of the importance of mentoring and being mentored comes in because unlike a book, a good mentor won't let you just give up and quit, at least not without an argument. What it adds up to is that Mr. Pace has written this book for more than just the poorly taught about succeeding who will benefit from its guidance; it is also written for those who already know how to succeed but are not yet sharing their knowledge with others. To put it another way, hey, you, Mr. or Ms. successful businessman or businesswoman! It is time to quit complaining about the ignorance of what it takes to succeed prevalent among young people today and time to start doing something about it! If you don't believe that YOU need a mentor (and Mr. Pace would argue that you might be mistaken about that), then it is time to BE a mentor! Start with your own children if you have any, but don't stop there! Think of it this way, any young people you manage to reach as a mentor will probably have better things to do should anti-capitalists decide to load people on buses to go throw rocks at your nice big house someday. Great work Tom. Easy read with a good message. Action defines success as you say in your book. Direction defines significance. I would recommend it for anybody looking to leave a legacy behind when you are gone.

My brother received this book from the actual author, and he passed it onto my older sister, then my sister passed onto me! It was such a powerful book to read, that I could not even put it down! I have finish reading this book, and pass in on for my 18 year old son to read. This truly is must have book for mentoring.

Mentor, the Kid and the CEO touched me. I read constantly, but it has been a long time since a book moved me like this one. The story is about how a young man with no direction in his life changes due in part to the influence of a mentor. The book is a fast read, but not simplistic. The storytelling by Walter Jenkins is excellent. I had to find out what happened next! Mentor has some excellent take-away features, such as a reading list and a to-do list of sorts for changing your life. There are more free mentoring helps on the website associated with the book. I believe that corporations and churches should buy quantities of these and set up mentoring programs.
