Tsien Hsue-shen (Qian Xuesen), was the father of Chinese rocketry and spaceflight. He was born in Hangzhou, China in 1911. A brilliant student, he went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on a Boxer Rebellion Scholarship in 1935. Becoming a protege of the legendary Theodor von Karman.
