Book Overview

Applying mechanical ventilation principles to patient care, Pilbeam's Mechanical Ventilation: Physiological and Clinical Applications, 5th Edition helps you provide safe, appropriate, and compassionate care for patients requiring ventilatory support. A focus on evidence-based practice includes the latest techniques and equipment, with complex ventilator principles simplified for optimal learning. This edition adds new case studies and new chapters on ventilator-associated pneumonia and on neonatal and pediatric mechanical ventilation. Starting with the most fundamental concepts and building to the most advanced, expert educator J. M. Cairo presents clear, comprehensive, up-to-date coverage of the rapidly evolving field of mechanical ventilation.

Excerpts of Clinical Practice Guidelines developed by the AARC (American Association for Respiratory Care) make it easy to access important information regarding indications/contraindications, hazards and complications, assessment of need, assessment of outcome, and monitoring.

Case Studies with exercises and Critical Care Concepts address situations that may be encountered during mechanical ventilation. Learning objectives at the beginning of each chapter help in accurately gauging your comprehension and measuring your progress. Chapter outlines show the "big picture" of each chapter's content. Key terms are listed in the chapter opener, then bolded and defined at their first mention in the text.

Key Point boxes highlight need-to-know information. NBRC exam-style assessment questions at the end of each chapter offer practice for the certification exam. NEW Neonatal and Pediatric Mechanical Ventilation chapter covers the latest advances and research relating to young patients.

Additional case studies in each chapter present "real-life" scenarios, showing the practical application of newly acquired skills.

End-of-chapter summaries help with review and in assessing your comprehension with a bulleted list of key content.

Excellent text for Respiratory Care

This was required for my Respiratory program, but I would still recommend this book. It contains a lot of good material on management of pts on vents, etc, and makes a good reference...

Foundation Knowledge for Clinical Engineers

This volume has much to recommend it but I will focus on just two. Firstly, it contains a clear description of the types and variation between current (and earlier) devices that enables a Clinical Engineer to better understand the pros and cons of a given device selection. Secondly there is a wealth of clearly explained clinical detail to ensure the subtleties of this important and complex topic can be understood by a Clinical Engineer. I found the discussions on the techniques used in home (or long term) ventilation particularly enlightening. I believe it will make a welcome addition to any Clinical Engineer's professional library.

A Great Resource!

I have just started my pulmonology residency and I have to say this book is a life-saver! It is a great resource. It has everything in a concise, srtaight-foward manner. It has helped me out of many a Grand Rounds jam. I highly highly recommend this book.

A major expansion & refinement of the previous edition.

Pilbeam establishes herself as the therapist expert in mechanical ventilation with this expanded & refined edition. It is current, readable, comprehensive & firmly based in clinical practice. Pilbeam is a national treasure in the field of respiratory care.

Insightful, student friendly, chapters flow easily

Having been away from Respiratory Therapy for a number of years, I needed a text that would bring me "up to speed" with changes in technology and current mindsets in acute and chronic care of the respiratory patient. What a joy this book is to read! The author obviously has the firmest of grasps on the subjects discussed and her teaching background is evident throughout.
