A good dialogue, but has a weak start

This book was on the whole a very well structured anthology showing how the debate amongst materialists has evolved on the nature of mind and the body. Hackett continues a fine tradition of providing first-rate philosophy at great prices. My chief gripe is that the dualistic selections at the beginning are Descartes and Spinoza--the latter in particular tends to be a favorite strawman for materialists and othere modern philosophers, and while a dualist myself I don't like Descartes' way of proving it. I understand that this book concentrates on materialism, but perhaps for another edition they could go for putting in a selection on dualism from Kant? That caveat aside, I still think this book a great introduction for a topic that will only grow more important as neuroscience progresses.

good anthology

This is a very good anthology for anyone who wants to begin getting a handle on the literature on materialism. The selection of essays is very good and includes many historically important pieces.
