Book Overview

Victor Zuckerkandl continues the development of his philosophy of music, for which he laid the foundation in Sound and Symbol . He regards the phenomenon of musicality as a trait common to all human beings, and analyzes at length the ways in which we perceive music, examining the processes involved in our sensitivity to tone, dynamic tone qualities, musical movement, and the structure of whole musical works.

organic unity in music

I think that most lovers of classical music have noticed and wondered at the way all the parts of the most complex classical compositions seem to fit together in a simple and satisfying pattern. Victor Zuckerkandl, using the ideas of musicologist Heinrich Schenker, goes a long way toward explaining this wonderful unity in diversity. What's more he does this so clearly that even a reader like me, with no musical training can understand. As a bonus, the reader gets introduced to the rich intellectual kingdom of Schenkerian analysis.
