You will make games in Flash with this book!

I am not a programmer. I use Flash to make cartoons and animations. I would like to improve and learn more about Flash and try making some Flash games. For me, the next step is getting a handle on Actionscript. That's why I bought this book. You will learn to make and then make games in Flash with this book. It is worth the money and then some. There is a reason most people rate this book highly. You don't have to be an experienced programmer at all; you just have to know the basics for Flash. His explanations are clear. The format is easy to read. This will be a book that is used as a reference after you read it, rather than just sitting on your bookshelf.I had a question and emailed the author, and he emailed me back a couple days later. That was nice. The book doesn't come with a cd, but you can download all the files from his website. The files are all manageable, even if you are using a 56k modem or less. Someone else who reviewed this book expressed problems downloading the files. I did not. It was easy and the book is fully supported. The book is full of code explanations. The beginning of the book is full of practical actionscript lessons to get non programmers up to speed. It's a good read, and doesn't have to be read cover to cover. You can jump around concentrating on the types of games that interest you.Again, this book is full value. Too many Flash books out there are overpriced and sit on the shelf after reading them once. This one bucks the trend. 5 stars.

Execellent game programming concepts

The book that i am currently reading ( Flash 5 fun and games ) is way out awesome. The concepts behind game programming have always interested me as a student in my final year in Software engineering. Anyway, LOTS of of concepts have been made so simple yet effective with the use of this book. This book has the ability to keep the user interested, and at the same time being ultimately informative and interesting to read both for leisure and also as a reference guide. Game programming concepts have never been made simpler..... It is a must for those interested into venturing into the ever exiciting and fun world of game creation. Gary Rosenzweig is very skillful at intrepreting technical programming jargons into very down-to-earth sentences. This book is a personal favourite ( I've been purchasing LOTS of programming books throughout the years ) and would remain one in the later years to come.

Well-used Flash 5 ActionScript resource

Of all the Flash 5 ActionScripting books in my collection (and I have them all), this one has the most pages flagged with post-it tags, and the most highlighted paragraphs. It offers clear, easy to understand instructions, with friendly tips and advice. The exercises helped me grasp key concepts of working with ActionScript. Gary shares the full scope of how to create games and activities; he doesn't just flash bits of esoteric code for effects you will never use. Although the book's focus is games, it's an excellent resource for learning basic ActionScript. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn ActionScripting.

Awesome book

This book is nothing short of sweet! Upon receiving this book I hastily tore through it and consumed all that precious little actionscript I could get to in one sitting. This book is not for beginners in my opinion.. you need to have at least a basic idea of actionscript to understand the concepts of what the book is conveying through the coding. I have throughly enjoyed this book. Rosenzweig took the time to put in a lot of comments into the coding so that, even if your coding is a bit on the rusty side (like mine) you can follow his reasoning through the comments. This book will help your actionscripting knowledge leaps and bounds, and the author was an extremely effective teacher through his text. This is a book about manipulating content within the movie... not necessarily creating the best looking enviorment. By this I mean you spend your time learning to manipulate the properties of movieclips and objects rather than creating goodlooking menus or gradient laiden interfaces. You should expect this however, it is a book on gaming. In conclusion, this is a great book for those interested in programming games or for those wanting to enhance their actionscripting skills. I would/will buy Rosenzweigs next book and be more than content if it is 1/5 as good as this one was.
