Book Overview

Cyrus Haven and Evie Cormac return in this "expertly paced and psychologically acute" (Kirkus Reviews, starred review) thriller from Michael Robotham that's "one of his best, suspenseful and hard to put down" (Stephen King).

Twenty years ago, Cyrus Haven survived a family massacre. The killer? His brother Elias.

Now Elias is applying for release from a secure psychiatric hospital--and Cyrus is expected to forgive and welcome...

Another great thriller

Lying beside you is the third book in the Cyrus Haven series. I highly recommend that you read the other two books before beginning this one. I’ll do my best to not leave spoilers but this review might have some minor ones. Cyrus Haven, who survived a family massacre committed by his brother Elias, is now a successful psychologist. As Elias seeks release from a psychiatric hospital, Cyrus is drawn into a murder investigation involving a missing girl, Maya Kirk. Evie Cormac, a gifted teenager living with Cyrus, becomes a key witness after glimpsing the suspect when a second girl is taken. However, only Cyrus and the killer believe Evie's testimony. Rating: 4.5/5 I really enjoyed this third book in the Cyrus Haven series, though it isn't my favorite of the series. Cyrus and Evie’s story takes an interesting path as they investigate another case, with Cyrus’s brother Elias involved this time. The plot is compelling, and Michael Robotham’s writing is wonderful, with tension building effectively throughout the book. I loved the interactions with both new and familiar side characters and appreciated the conclusion. My only real complaint is that I didn't see enough of Evie's true quirky self; she seemed a bit subdued and more conforming to normality, which didn't feel true to her character. Additionally, I felt Cyrus hadn’t made major progress despite the passage of time since the last book. Nonetheless, I’m eagerly anticipating the fourth book in this series and will continue to happily explore Michael Robotham’s work.
