"As near as he could figure ,the only crop that this country raised was dashed hopes."

After a very pleasant detour to Broken Bow ,Oklahoma,Longarm is in his way to find Lt.Meadows and a bunch of army deserters who have been on a rampage of holdups in Texas. This is not your run of the mill gang of owlhoots, but seasoned and well trained soldiers, who know how to look after themselves and evade capture. Longarm doesn't think he'll have much hope in finding them as there is so much country for them to get lost in. Not to worry, they find Longarm, when they hold up the train he is on. They are after the army payroll;but are really mad when they find out they've got the wrong train. At this point,Meadows decides to hold the Railroad company up for ransom of $150,ooo,and threatens to kill the hostages, one by one, till they come up with the money. It looks like Longarm is in a hopeless situation;but we know he will eventually get the upper hand and bring the rascals to justice---peacefully if possible;but with rough and tough Old West action if necessary. Despite, all of Meadows training, and advantage in men and weapons,Longarm plays Lt.Meadows like a cheap violin, and triumphs. During the most difficult times, our hero is reminded of Billy Vail's words; "If you'd spend more time figuring out how to stay out of trouble, you wouldn't have to spend so damn much effort getting out of it." Be that as it may,it wouldn't be as exciting or as enjoyable and not the way our hero does things. Longarm is going to have a tough report to put together for his boss;so why not stop for a few days in Broken Bow to get some rest,do the report, and enjoy life a bit...he figures he has earned it!!!
