GREAT BOOK

I bought it for my college studying. Expected that it would be so boring. Also it has overwhelming amount of terminology you physically are not able to memorize, it explains very precisely which rights are granted to us by the Constitution of USA, how government is functioning, what is behind those Amendments we hear about, how any law makes it way to people, etc. This book is a great source for understanding of the political processes in this country. Definitely recommend it to everyone.

A book to excite young people to become involved

First off, not only am I using this political science textbook for my political science 110 class on national government and politics, but my teacher for the class is Professor Dan Shea (the main writer). Professor Shea said on the first day of class that he wanted to create a textbook that would give young people something to enjoy in politics. He wanted a textbook that would show college students how their voice does make a difference in our country's future. In the overview chapter, Professor Shea and colleagues write about Pathways for Change (i.e. elections, lobbying, courts, grassroots mobilization, and cultural change). They write in the introduction to the first chapter that young people were the ones who gave now President Barack H. Obama his first victory in Iowa. The writers note that without young people wishing for the change Senator Obama promised to bring, Hillary Clinton would almost certainly have won the Democratic nomination. The cover itself conveys the main theme of the book: that young people can live democracy like wearing a tee-shirt. Professor Shea said that while most American government textbooks have pictures of grand buildings on their cover, he wanted a simple cover to show that each person can live the principles of democracy with which our Founding Fathers believed and Jefferson wrote, "...that all men are created equal, endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, which among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." Note: This textbook is slightly more progressive in nature than many high school political science textbooks I have read. The writers (including Professor Shea) drills into the reader that our country has made major mistakes in its past. It explores these mistakes. Therefore, for people that want a textbook that pretends that America has never gone through rough periods where we did not follow the idea of "all people are equal" (ex: discrimination against people of minority races, women, the poor), you may find this textbook a bit offensive. In other words, Rush Limbaugh probably would not endorse this textbook.
