The Little Rose of Sharon

This book is nourishment for the sight, mind, and soul.As the story unfolds, one is taken page by page through a lush, vibrant, tapestry of visual art.As we learn or are reminded of the even more breathtaking awesome power of selfless love, our spirit is deeply magnified.I too cried. This book belongs in every home. It encompasses age, gender, and denomination.

During our Christmas book swap, one of my 2nd grade students received Little Rose of Sharon from another student. Since we had a little extra time after our Christmas party, I decided to read to the students some of the books they had received and started with this one. I had to pause twice at the end... to let the tears roll. I was not prepared to cry in front of my class; however, I could not contain myself. Little Rose of Sharon is the wonderful illustration of how much value a beautiful little rose puts on her looks, thinking that these please her Creator. Nevertheless, as she sheds her petals to keep a fallen dove's egg warm, she discovers that the sacrifice she makes is far more pleasing to Him than her outward beauty.

This book truly shows the love of Jesus. Its story of love and grace is something that I want to teach my children. Because of the moving story and lovely pictures, children (and adults) will love to read this book again and again.

Nan Gurley has given us a story about love that is too wonderful for words. You have to EXPERIENCE this book. There is usually a risk when we try to help another, and this rose gave up her beauty so that another would be comforted, but was blessed by God To hear Nan sing the song is another beautiful experience. So I suggest she put the whole experience on VIDEO!

This is a beautiful story of sacrifice. About a rose who gives up her most prized possesion (her lovely pedals) to save a baby dove. My children love it. I love it. And all I let read it love it. It touches the heart. You may even shed a tear or two.
