Little House in the Big Woods [With Gold-Tone Fiddle Charm]

This historical true life story of a frontier family creating a life in the Big Woods of Wisconsin is a must read for anyone preteen to whatever age it is when your eyes can’t focus to read anymore- a hundred? They make a happy life from the simple things around them. It’s very simply written, but it doesn’t feel like reading a children’s book. After reading this book- and/or any in this series, you will certainly appreciate the comforts we all enjoy everyday now, and it may help you realize how much we could actually do without.

I just wandered if it possible to get a set of all 17 books paperback and about how much please.

Bought this series for my 10 year old. Both of us read it (and enjoyed it) and now look forward to reading book two of the series.

This book was in way better shape than I could have hoped for, it was delivered earlier than I expected. I am very pleased.

My six year old daughter and I are reading this book together. Building her attention was easier than I thought, with this book. After the first five pages she wanted to keep reading. Eighteen pages later she was dying to draw a picture of what had happened. This book really reminds me of what the purpose of families are all about. Every page describes what "Ma" or "Pa" was doing to take care of the family. The daughters found joy in every simple, hard or enduring task that had to be undertaken to produce a family of early American prairie days. This book uses simple words and descriptions to help build my 6 year olds attention. As well as, random sketched pictures throughout to excite the children's imagination. This has been more than a school assignment, but an excuse to spend real time with my daughter.

Life is hard living on the frontier of Wisconsin in the 1870's. Laura is only a little girl, but she still needs to help with chorus around her family's log cabin. There are wild animals in the woods, and they must provide for themselves since the nearest town in hours away. But it's not all hard work. If Pa's not tired, he might entertain his daughters with a story or by playing his fiddle. With family relatively nearby to visit, life is certainly never dull.I had not read these books since I was a child until picking this up to reread. I had forgotten how entertaining they really are. There is no real plot, just a collection of stories covering a year in the life of the Ingalls family. This makes sense since they really are an autobiographical work. Still, the simple charm of the stories sucked me right in and I had a hard time putting the book down. There is plenty of detail here to give anyone a good picture of daily life during this time. And I must mention the illustrations by Garth Williams that greatly add to the book.There's a reason these books are so well loved 70 years after they were written. They are an entertaining look at everyday life in a different time and place. This is a book to treasure.

In the 1870's there was a little cozy house. In it there lived the Ingalls family including Ma, Pa, Mary, Carrie, and Laura, who is the main character in the story. Even though the house and yard require a lot of work, the family always does something fun that makes the work seem exciting. Their cousins come to spend Christmas with the Ingalls family. They also go to their grandma and grandpas's house for a family dance. In one part of the story, Ma slapped a bear thinking it was a cow! In another part, Pa got a big, thick stick and ran after a bear and started hitting it. A few minutes after, he found out it was a burnt down stump in the shape of a bear. This is a great book, and I think you should read it! I vote it number one!

I was in search of a good story to read aloud to my five year old daughter who loves books. To me, the obvious choice was Little House in the Big Woods, a book I associate with my own mother reading to me. This book was a fabulous choice. My daughter and I both looked forward to reading a chapter or two each night. This book sparked her interest in a time long ago, she is now constantly wondering if Laura and Mary had faucets and if they had Barbies. She has learned to appreciate what we have now, while also appreciating the beauty and joy of a simpler life. Laura and Mary are excellent role models for her. While they are children with spirit, they also mind their parents. This book has given her imagination a boost too for we all now pretend to be the Ingalls family. I highly recommend this book (and the rest of the series) to all parents of young children. It is perfect read aloud material for it holds a great story, with many moral lessons for our children.
