Life on a Plantation

This book is intended to help an older elementary student understand the life on a Southern Plantation approximately around the 1850's. It does focus on the plantation owners but mostly on the running of the plantation through slavery. It does a very good job at teaching a student about that topic. I will use this also to teach my older ESOL students learning American History.

I am a writer of historical fiction, and I absolutely rely on Bobbie Kalman's wonderful nonfiction books. This one even shows the layout of a plantation with neatly drawn illustrations of the Quarters and the various houses or work areas where all goods were made. B. Kalman's books are excellent for individuals as well as teachers to use with their classrooms. I recommend the Dear America and My Name is America series as well as the books by K.J. McWilliams (The Diary of a Slave Girl, Ruby Jo, The Journal of Leroy Jones, a Fugitive Slave, and The Journal of Darien Duff, an Emancipated Slave.)
