Letters to Philip

Letters to Philip was written a long time ago, however I found it to be very applicable in my life. Shedd shares his views on many different topics of marriage. I would recommend this book to young men who are looking for advice in any relationship they are in. It gives practical advice on courtship to marriage. Being a young man myself it taught me to treat women with more respect. It taught me about women's feelings and what they expect from their man. If you are a young christian man that is currently dating, engaged, or married this is a must read! Sure it was written in the 1960's but it definitely contains some good advice. The book is old fashioned, but then again the way our society is today I wouldn't mind going back to the old ways when it comes to treating girls the right way.

Letters to Philip is the collection of letters written by a father to his son before his marriage. While some may say this is outdated advice, I would disagree. I'm sure most future wives who read this would agree that they would want their husbands to learn from it. Certainly there seems to be some material you may feel is old fashioned, and I'd agree (i.e. the idea that women do the cooking, men show up for dinner, the traditional models of marriage, etc.). Still, Shedd gives you some food for thought, and having read it through more than three times over the years, has good advice to keep coming back to. I recommend the young man to read this and his future bride to read Letters to Karen.

I will be forever indebted to Mr. Shedd for his wisdom on how to treat a woman. Being a husband, pastor, and counselor makes him an ideal man to write such a book. Along with Elisbeth Elliot and James Dobson books, this is an essential read for all men. Shedd focuses on the little everyday things that will reap great rewards (or losses) in the end. Memorize this work before you get married or even date for that matter.

This is wonderful, witty, practical advice on how to keep love alive. For years, it has been my favorite gift to give to engaged couples...along with its companion, "Letters to Karen." Charlie Shedd is a master on building healthy, loving relationships in a world bent on destroying them. I read everything he writes!

I re-read this book recently (along with it's companion, "Letters to Karen"), and I still love it! It was written eons ago, and is still timely because all principles outlined are Biblical. I'm impressed that Mr. Shedd is so loving and so honest--what everyone needs today. I recommend this book to marrieds and singles alike, no matter what gender you are. I now have a different perspective on what I need in relationships, and how I should expect to be treated. I mailed a copy of this book to my boyfriend and he reported that he's already read and re-read it! Great reading!!
