Vancouver was originally laid out as Vancouver City, to distinguish it from the Hudson's Bay's Fort Vancouver. Dr. John Mcloughlin, now known as the "Father of Oregon," treated the settlers fairly, and lost his job in return. The Short family, the Hidden family, and other pioneers settled near the fort.
