The author covers the main arguments put forward by many of the world's leading philosophers, from the ancient Greeks to the modern (ie, 17th to 20th Century) thinkers. He explains the various concepts in layman's terms, cutting through the very archaic language beloved of some of the great philospohers. In addition, he provides exercises for the reader which allows the reader to make his/her own mind up about the theories and ideas proposed, so readers do not get the author's (possibly biased) viewpoint, but can formulate his/her own. It also helps the reader to approach all reading material with a more critical and analytical attitude. An excellent introduction to a subject which, courtesy of this book, is not as difficult or unapproachable as many might imagine. Paul Waldron Dublin,Ireland Nov 2004
