Phyllida is a tall pretty nurse, whose dull, self-satisfied doctor boyfriend has taken it for granted they will marry, without bothering to ask her. When she tells him she doesn't intend to marry him, he shows signs of becoming a nuisance, so that she decides to accept a temporary job taking care of an 18-year-old girl with a fatal type of leukaemia who is being brought on a Mediterranean cruise. When the girl's condition worsens, Phyllida is put ashore with her while the unfeeling parents continue the cruise. When the girl dies, Pieter (a large handsome doctor, as is usual in Betty Neels' books) comes on the scene in an opportune way, takes care of everything, and helps Phyllida get home. There are complications due to the dishonesty of others who want the hero and heroine for themselves, but, as always, their uppances come and all ends happily for the deserving.
