when i was a kid, i was really into the little mermaid. i was enamored of the disney mermaid and the romantic european mermaid. my mother indulged me in all this, but she also tried to include a version that more reflected our own culture: hence la sirena del desierto. we had a lot of bilingual books growing up, but this one really sticks out in my mind. i remember initially rejecting it; it was weird, i couldn't tell what the mermaid looked like, and it was in spanish! but in retrospect, this really was one of the most beautiful books i owned as a child. i only wish i still had the copy she bought for me.
