Travis, Modern American History

The novel entitled Khaki Wings, by Milton Dank, takes events take place during the years of World War I (1914-1918). The main character, Edward, is a young man, at nearly the age of seventeen. He, follow his patriotism, joins the Royal Flying Corps as an observer. He serves under a Lieutenant, and the book follows their journeys and events during the war in their area of operation, France, on the front line. This book is a prime example of the statement "The times shape you". What ever is going on in the present causes us to shape around it. At first, Edward was registered to be a mechanic. But due to the fighting and shortage of pilots, he volunteered to be an observer. Through out the book we see this 17 year old boy grow into a seventeen year old man. After seeing the effects of what war was really like, he learned to take it more seriously. In the fact that it wasn't a game where you win a medal and everyone loved you. The people around you, your close friends, would die as a result of war. He learned this due to the times he lived in.
