Great book, but why does Peet use Spanish?

I enjoyed this book enormously and plan on teaching it to my students (many of whom are soccer players from Mexico). I read the ALA review above and I was surprised to see the narrative described as choppy. I hadn't had any real criticisms of the narrative flow, except perhaps during the resolution in the last 25 pages of the book. Perhaps the most confusing section is the one in italics on page 201 of the hard-back edition. The way in which the flashback conflates Walter Graff and la cigüeña was difficult to decipher, but I found it to be artful and worth the work to understand. I plan on taking my students through that passage several times and having them do some visual depictions of what they think is going on. There was one other thing actually troubled me throughout the book: We know the characters are in Brazil because they mention Sao Paolo and San Juan, and people speak Portuguese in Brazil. So why did Mr. Peet use Spanish for the nicknames and non-English words? I'd love to ask the author directly, but I haven't found an e-mail address for him.

Keeper

The book I read was Keeper by Mal Peet. I highly recommend this book if you like sports and non fiction books, and you don't just have to like soccer to read this book. The book Keeper is not just all about soccer, there is so much more to the book that will make u fall in love with it, and not want to put it down. One of the things I liked most about this book is because it goes into great depth and detail. The author makes you feel like you're inside the story, and with all of the characters. My favorite character in this book is Gato. Gato Is not only a character, but is on of my many ideals. I can relate to him because he once was a goalkeeper just like me. This story is about Gato at his younge ages, not liking soccer that much and not being so great at it either. As Gato comes across some unusual things his mind just mite change! You get to see the story of Gato and who he once was and how he became who he is today.

I loved this book. Peet is phenomenal when it comes to bringing things to life with this novel. I found myself actually getting goose bumps from this book. Truly a good read, I highly recommend to anyone.
