REN'S LOVE HOTEL HAREM

Karin has her bleeding body a little bit more under control than before. When she's around Kenta, she's at least able to carry on a conversation or hang out without exploding in a cloud of blood. She hasn't told him that it's his bad luck and misfortune that causes that effect. He has still been keeping the secret that she's a vampire and it's even starting to spread through the school that maybe they're a couple, much to both their horror! Kenta's mom is till working as a maid at a love hotel and it's there that she stumbles upon the harem of Ren, Karin's brother, who takes advantage of any sad cute girl he sees. His next target: Kenta's mom! While most of Chibi Vampire is comedy, what gives it an edge over other stories of this ilk is its flirtation with human misery. The fact that the vampires in the manga are attracted to people's suffering automatically lets the writer touch on some basic human experiences. An especially good example in this book is the character of Harumi, a girl who ran away from an unhappy family situation and has now been forced as a means of survival to become a callgirl. Kenta's mom establishes a bond with the girl and tries to rescue her from the situation, even though it could mean her own job, and we know how many times she's lost her job in the past. Kagesaki balances the drama by immediately following it with a funny tale of Anju's puppet, the knife wielding Boogie, being kidnapped. Chibi Vampire is a nice mix of comedy, drama, and humanity.
