What a great book!

Yesterday the UPS man dropped off a package on my front porch. I was excited to tear into it & find this book. The shiny, colorful hardback was well received by my whole family. We were all anxious to read through the book and watch the DVD of bloopers from Jack Hanna's wildlife TV show. Neither the book or the DVD left us disappointed! Each double page spread includes vivid, crisp pictures of a different animal and all sorts of interesting information about it. Did you know that a sloth only poops once a week? Did you know that a baboon's bright red bottom is actually a thick callous (read: seat-cushion!) and not bare skin? Did you know that a hyena "laughs" when it's afraid...and that is a warning signal to RUN! I bet you didn't know that a platypus is venomous! These were some of my kids' favorite details. The DVD was about 20 minutes long and included vintage clips from the show's early years as well as more recent ones. It was very funny to watch. All in all, I was quite pleased with this book! The animals include the blue-footed booy, the baboon, the emperor penguin, the playpus, the wallaby, the hyena, the flamingo, the binturong, the echidna, the puffer fish, the black rhinoceros, the african elephant, the great white shark, the cape buffalo, the brown bear, the lion, the leopard, the tasmanian devil, the anaconda, the piranha, the bongo, the giant anteater, the armadillo, the sloth, the ostrich, the hissing cockroach, the octopus, the okapi, the chameleon and the naked mole rat. Each animal is represented with several color phtos, along with information on what they eat, where they live, how big they get and what makes them weird. The book also includes a DVD with bloopers from the Jack Hanna's Into the Wild show. A nice book for children to flip through and to learn about some unusual, and some familiar animals.

FUN BOOK!!

What a FUN book! This book is full of colorful pictures and fun facts about 30 animals from around the world. The book also includes a DVD with clips from Jack's adventures - bloopers, blunders, and behind-the-scenes looks. This book is a must have for any animal lover. I love everything about this book. From the full-color pages of pictures and facts about each unique animal, to the layout and design of the book (each animal has one full page devoted to it), to the limitless opportunities to use the book to teach/learn about different animals and how God has created each one in its uniqueness. I can't wait to share the book with my kids - even now my daughter is begging to read it with me.

Review: The Wackiest Wildest Weirdest Animals in the World by Jack Hanna

I love this book. The DVD was very funny. I didn't know Jack could trip so much. The animals were very interesting and I learned about so many animals that I have never heard of. This is my favorite book about animals and I would check it out from the library if I didn't have one already. Sometimes I just read this book before bed and then I have very cool dreams. I hope to work at a zoo when I grow up. I would recommend this book for ages three to nine. (Mom's review below:) The Wackiest Wildest Weirdest Animals in the World by Jack Hanna was far more fun and entertaining that I had expected. Each large, colorful page identifies the animal as either wild, weird, or wacky near the bottom of the page. In total, there are ten wacky, ten wild, and ten weird animals featured. My favorite was the Blue-footed Booby, the first wacky animal. General facts are highlighted, such as diet, habitat, and size. Short attention spans will appreciate the callout boxes that highlight interesting animal facts and trivia. More curious and devoted animal fans will enjoy the longer narrative on the side bar that goes more in depth with additional interesting animal facts. The pictures are eye-catching and shows the animal in it's natural setting. The final two pages of the book have a 37 word glossary to explain terms found throughout the book, such as scavenger, nocturnal, billabong, brackish, and more. My animal-crazy daughter immediately read the book cover to cover and watched the DVD twice with her best friend. They loved the video, but I can imagine younger children may not understand or enjoy the parts of the DVD where animals are not involved. The included DVD runs 19 minutes in length, and more than half of the time does not involve animals but rather just Jack Hanna and crew bloopers, such as Jack falling down (all the time), a sound man sleeping on the job, Jack mistakenly purchasing women's shoes for himself in Africa and getting laughed at, Jack trading the shoes for two necklaces in an open-air market, Jack getting dressed up as a warrior, and Jack showing up late for a safari appointment. The animal scenes are cute, especially when he keeps getting his knees pecked. The footage also contains older footage of him with his daughter The hardcover was larger that I had imagined, measuring 10.75" x 10.75". Although the hardcover is very sturdy, the inside binding left a little to be desired, and with only two reads, I found that on page 20/21that the back binding was already exposed, but considering this is both glued and threaded, I expect the pages will not fall out.
