A Good Introduction to Juicing

"Fruit and vegetables, especially in their raw state, contain living enzymes that are essential in the breaking down and absorption of nutrients." ~ pg. 1 When Julie Stafford says you will feel different in just a few days, she is quite correct. Try juicing and you will notice that you have more energy and feel more alert. She also says that juices help to speed up the body's metabolism. If you are wondering why fresh juices are better for you it is because store-bought juices are pasteurized (heated) and this kills the natural enzymes and destroys the vitamin C. This book helped me understand the healthiest way to juice. Like there is advice on when to leave the skins on certain fruits and vegetables because the most valuable nutrients are often found just below the skin. There are also some tips on how to use the leftover fiber when baking or even when making soups. Two chapters cover the topic of vitamins and minerals in juices. The recipes in this book are interesting and gave me some ideas about flavor combinations. Each chapter in the recipe section starts with one specific fruit or vegetable and then gives options for juice combinations. Some include: Pear, Grapefruit and Pineapple Mango, Orange, Pineapple and Passionfruit Lemon, Mandarin and Pineapple Blueberry, Pear and Lemon juice After juicing for almost a week I've discovered that you don't really need to follow the recipes too closely. In this book weights of fruit and vegetables are given and I find that less helpful than just saying juice a pineapple and orange and an apple. I like juicing one entire fruit or vegetable so there is less waste. So feel free to modify anything in this book. I've had great success just using some of the flavor combinations. Here is one recipe I made up today: 1 pineapple, peeled and sliced 1 apple, unpeeled 8 strawberries, cut in half If you have 15 minutes try this gourmet juice I made this up and it goes faster if you prep all the vegetables first and have them ready on a plate. That way you're not turning the juicer on and off which seems to waste time (juice it in this order): 2 cloves garlic 5 basil leaves handful parsley 2 tomatoes, cut into wedges 15 chives 2 celery ribs 1 carrot, sliced in half lengthwise 2 radishes, cut in half 1/2 cucumber, peeled and cut in half lengthwise Stir in - a little hot sauce like Tiger Sauce to spice things up a bit The juicer I've been using is Black & Decker Juice Extractor. As long as you don't mind cutting fruits and vegetables in small pieces I think you will appreciate the efficiency and the results. The juice is separated from the fiber giving you a more instant form of energy. Juicing for Health

I really enjoyed this book a lot. It has a lot of very helpful information regarding the benefits of a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. I keep it in my kitchen cabinet as a quick reminder of what each fruit or veggie is doing for my body as I juice it. I also use it when talking to others about the benefits of juicing.

good basic juicing book

Some basic juicing information is given along with lots of recipes. But some of the information on juicing is taken straight from Jay Juiceman's book, right down to a few unsited direct quotes. The part that bothers me is that she fails to give him any credit anywhere in the book, not even a recommended reading list. So if it's more juice recipes you're after, get this book, if it's more detailed information on juicing, get the book she quietly used as a source _The Juiceman's Power of Juicing_ by Jay Kordich.

Excellent nutritional information and tasty recipes.

I found this book an excellent information source for nutritional information on fruit and vegetable juices. It is well organized and indexed by primary fruit and vegetable and contains a section on spicy elements such as ginger root and garlic which can be used to add zest to the juice. Rather than a purely medicinal type book, it has recipes and illustrations for some really tasty treats. My favorite is a carrot parsnip combination with a little parsley ad lib. I use this book every day and recommend it to anyone who wants good health with good taste.
