Great encouragement

This book is a great encouragement. I am half way through it and it is full of Godly encouragement & wisdom to help you continue on your journey. This book has been a blessing to my heart.

A Hidden Gem! or If you've come this far, maybe you'll come a little farther.

I am using this book in a 19-week program designed to help people in transition to change their lives for the better. Once I learned that this book would be used, written by leader of the program, I was skeptical. After all, who hasn't taken classes in which the professor's text was the assigned book? But once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. The writing is clear as a cloudless day, the insights, incredibly powerful, are so easily explained, enhanced by some of the most memorable anecdotes I've ever read. And I've read probably a hundred self-help books over my life, but this one is exceptional: it cleanly nails problems on the head, without judgement, criticism,or a lot of b.s., then delivers the solution for handling it. The author is so perceptive that each chapter feels as if it were written with you in mind; you feel as if he must have known you and is addressing you personally. And all this is presented without artifice--there is no belabored philosophy or paradigm to decipher before you can understand the issue. In other words, the writing is egoless, unselfish--and you quickly begin to feel as if the writer has come to rescue you specifically. While it is grounded in a belief in God, the author does not proselytize; this is no evangelical guilt trip. If one doesn't subcribe to Christianity, you can easily interpret it as your Higher Power...as you understand it. There is no attempt to convert here, merely an honest analysis of what holds people back, according to an author who's been there, done that. Already, I'm using these marvelous anecdotes in my own conversations--they are fascinating, both for their simplicity and aptness. I love the one about knowing where to place the X; the other about two boats and a helicopter; the difference between "trying" and "training";the monkey who couldn't let go. I wrote this review because I fear the book won't escape its category as a Christian lifestyle text--it is so much more than that. It's written to help people move on, to make changes in their lives, changes that we've often attempted every year but have never accomplished. This author knows exactly why you don't make it and exactly what you have to do to succeed. It's that simple. For me, this book is like that gift left for Red after he got out of Shawshank Prison. It's my ticket out of prison and on toward the Pacific.

Hope CAN Be Restored

Those commercials are right: Life DOES come at us fast. And so many of us end up weary and wounded along the journey. This manual represents a piercing light of hope and healing into the midst of life's inevitable pain. One of the reasons it is such a helpful resource is that Scott himself has walked the less-traveled road from utter despair to joy-filled recovery, and he knows how to guide others toward the place where HOPE resides. As someone who has walked part of the journey myself, I can testify that freedom IS possible...and that Scott's book is an insightful tool that shines much-needed line on the path. I recommend it highly.
