An outstanding manual for training weanlings and starting yearlings by "America's Most Trusted Horseman." Every young horse will benefit from John Lyons' training methods because they lay a strong foundation for future under-saddle work in all disciplines.
This is a great book for those who need to teach a baby, an ex-racer, or any horse the essential basics. Each lesson begins with a description of that you're going to do and why. There's also a list of needed equipment (all of these lessons are to take place in a round pen or arena with the corners "rounded" off). Step-by-step, Lyons takes you through the lesson, providing a picture with each step and a description of what you are doing. I recommend this book to anyone who needs to teach any horse basic ground manners.
I bought this book for my 15 year old daughter & her new foal

I bought this book for my daughter. She lost her older hunter horse and decided she didnt want another made horse. She could never replace him so she wanted a foal and to raise it herself. Well Bella is only 7 months old and a handful but by using this and one other book she has already taught her to lead. Just a few minutes for a couple of days and using these techniques she has had small successes. this is one of the better books that I could find for it was easy to understand the directions and pictures. It is one of the better books to purchase if you plan on raising a baby too.

John Lyons IS the best horse in the paddock!
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 19 years ago
As a professional horse trainer who lives her craft, I give John Lyons a TON of credit for making me the horsewoman I am today. John is known as America's Most Trusted Horseman and I'll take it a step further and call him the guy who writes THE how-to books on training. John's not a bells and whistles kind of guy, just one heck of a great trainer. If you purchase only one book on horse training, I suggest this reasonably priced book that beautiflly illustrates how John builds a foundation of trust and respect. If you are able to apply the basic principles illustrated, you will be able to improve any horse, regardless of age or experience - and I mean that for both you and your horse. The book features 20 progressive ground-work lessons to develop your horse into a reliable, accepting partner. I Give It 4 Hooves Up!
Great book!

Although I've raised some foals before, I found this book very useful. The progressive lessons are great and it's very handy to be sure that you aren't leaving out anything in your foal's training. Kind methods and well organized, a great book.
