Our Favorite Cookbook

I am buying 2 copies as presents for my children. Most of their favorite desserts from their childhood come from this book. Every recipe is great and the stories that go with them are priceless.

This book is fantastic!

I had to order this book again because it got lost in all of the moving around I've done. I absolutely love it! The recipies are VERY easy too follow and come out exactly like described. The short introductions before each recipe are wonderful. Very well written and I would recommend it to ANYONE!!!

My Personal Favorite

I bought this book several years ago and still use it weekly. It is my absolute favorite cookbook! The recipes are easy to use and kid friendly. My entire family loves the sweet treats I bake using Fobel's recipes. What a wonderful cookbook. Thanks for sharing Jim!

Classic desserts

What makes this book special? That you can find there many of the specialties of American Baking. Instructions are clear and recipes fantastic. However, don't expect to find sophisticated desserts (I thought so). This book is for everyday baking. Perhaps you can adapt some of the recipes for special occasion, but this book will be your everyday baking guide.

Every cook needs their bible, and Fobel's is the one to have

I have never been one for the stove top (except to melt butter), but show me an oven, and I'm in heaven. I believe that energy is neither created nor destroyed, only transferred, and what better way to transfer positive energy than in baking? Real baking. No margarine, no Betty Crocker, just you, all those wonderful ingredients, lots of wooden spoons and pans, and of course, Jim Fobel's Old-Fashioned Baking Book. Every baker needs their bible, and Jim's has been mine for almost ten years. From Bed and Breakfast to family gatherings Fobel's book has been my guide again and again. He's there with you when you're kneading the dough, running the mixer, or meticulously pinching that pie crust. You feel as if someone has let you in to all those wonderful, secret recipes of your ancestors. You know - the ones where no measuring was needed, and the whole concept of baking centered around making delights for those you loved and loved you back. Serious baking is not for those in a hurry but rather those who believe in TLC and putting a part of themselves (methaphorically!) in what they create. If that's what baking means to you then you'll love Fobel.

I have hundreds of cookbooks, this one ranks in the top 10.

I have this book in hardback. I have made at least 30 of the recipes from it and not once had a failure. I now bake pies exclusively from this book. I love the notes Mr. Fobel writes about the history of each beloved recipe. The books introduction makes facinating reading too. Great!
