A hasid of a different kind

Had Pinchas Sadeh been born in another world, say that of the Hasidut of the eighteenth or nineteenth centuries he would have been a supreme storyteller, a master maker of aggadot of faith. For in him there is a spiritual longing and quest. And this defines his work throughout, a quest and a very individual approach to life, and literature. There are signs that towards the end of his life he moved closer to the Jewish Tradition, and this is reflected in this volume of retellings. Sadeh was above all a poet, and he infuses his retellings with poetic feeling. The excellent translation is by Hillel Halkin.
