I read this book for the first time at age 13 or 14 and have since then every year at least once. It is about a friendship between Krister, aged ten and from a well-situated family, and the secretive Jan. Jan has no last name, no age, no family, no one knows where he lives. He does not know about fairytales but all about clowns cand comedians. One day the bike and his clothes are found by the police - that is where the book sets in with Krister remembering all the stages of their friendship and in the course of the book, he begins to realize and grow up. I love this book because it is not written in the "happily-ever-after" style but much more realistic and thoughtful touching upon many sensitive issues of kids becoming teenagers. It does not reveal the secret behind Jan until the last page and not even there everything is clear so that it is up to the reader to think and imagine. Of all books of Peter Pohl it is my favourite.
