This work, as others in the New Collegeville Bible Commentary series, provides a verse - by - verse examination of its subject. The layout is an excellent study aid: the reading, with boldface subheadings, runs across the top of each page, and the commentary, with related bold headings, appears below. Each of the four sections opens with information on the author of the letter, his audience, purpose, and major themes. A map of the area and questions for discussion are included. Hartin, a professor of religious studies at Gonzaga University, provides clear, well organized commentary. For example, he points out themes in one, two, three order and uses key words like "next" and "finally" to connect the material. And though this is primarily a study of ancient scriptures, the commentary makes clear that the message of these readings is timeless.
