When I read this book I felt as though I were reading my own account of my illness, surgery and recovery. Mr. VanHooser tells from start to finish every step of this debilitating illness. This book is a must read for anyone that suffers from or has a loved one that suffers from IBS. The straightforward manner in which he shares his experience will hit home with anyone who is affected by this disease. It was so much more than the usual informational book, it gave all the information you need but also gifted you with an emotional and physical victory that gives you hope.

In "It Takes More Than Guts" Phil Van Hooser has shared in very personal detail, what it's like to suffer with IBD. At the same time he has told his story with inspiration, humor and a tremendous amount of factual information. He has done an excellent job of presenting this information from the prospective of the IBD Sufferer, the view of the various medical professionals who treated the disease and from his close friends and family members who were there to support him and pray for his recovery. That approach has resulted in a 360 degree view of the effects of the desease, its impact as well as what can be done to help cope with it effectively. I highly recommend this book and the DVD suppliment!

Phil VanHooser has written a truly compelling book about his personal experience as an IBD sufferer. Although Phil writes about Colitis, and his experiences - I have personally lived with Crohn's Disease for over 25 years, and found Phil's book to be one of the best, most relevant, and insightful books on IBD - a must read for any person, young or old - that has lived with any form of IBD, or knows someone that has. Once I started reading - I could not put it down. From the humorous to the serious, from the personal to the professional perspective - it is all covered here with a friendly touch. I feel like Phil just wrote a book about my life experiences - which made it even more enjoyable. I found it to be so good, that I just ordered 10 copies for friends.

Van Hooser's book, about his real experience with IBD and ultimately with major colon surgery, is both a usful book for sufferers of similar maladaies, and an inspiration for anyone who is facing a significant trial. Filled with humor and good natured advice, this book is well worth reading. I recommend it!
